Thayer Central getting a beef boost

A good education starts with a good meal.

At one rural Nebraska school, the hamburgers children eat at lunch taste a little fresher than the fare noshed by their peers across the state.

The beef on trays at Thayer Central Community Schools in Hebron is raised exclusively in Nebraska and donated by local ranchers.

Thanks to a new fundraising effort called the Titan Beef Boosters, Thayer Central has three years worth of beef pledged and more than $35,000 donated to cover processing costs. A local grocery store, Central Market, is providing cold storage.

The generosity of local farmers and ranchers has allowed the school to increase the number of times a week beef is on the menu, as well as leaving more money in the budget to buy more fresh fruits and vegetables, said Susan Dishman, the school’s director of food service.

Also, the school’s kitchen is getting new equipment that will let staff cook more meals from scratch.
