Sorghum is making a big splash

A year ago, as corn prices plummeted, a tiny grain made a big splash in the grain markets.
Sorghum, a grass with a colorful seed about the size of a BB, was selling at more than a dollar a bushel above corn thanks to China’s voracious appetite for grain free of genetically modified hybrids
sorghum will be harvested in Nebraska this year than has been since the 1980s. It has also caught the eye of the U.S. Department of Energy, which in the past six months has announced it’s spending $55.8 billion to research strains with improved drought tolerance that will grow with little nitrogen and make a great base for ethanol production Nebraska farmers are expected to produce 21.6 million bushels of sorghum this year
Man gives Holdrege YMCA $1 million

THOLDREGE — A Holdredge man has given $1 million to the local YMCA — a gift he says is intended to both help local children and to honor his own late parents.
Don Sjogren, 83, was on hand Saturday at the Holdrege YMCA for a gathering to rename the center the Don Sjogren Community YMCA.
Sjogren, who is not married and has no children, now lives at Holdrege Memorial Homes and described the joy he experienced participating in the YMCA’s Adopt-A-Grandparent program.
