On this day,

2010- The world’s tallest building opens in Dubai.  It’s called the Burj Khalifa.

2003- Martha Stewart steps down as head of her media empire, after being charged with obstruction of justice, conspiracy, securities fraud and lying to investigators.

2001- Nepal’s King Dipendra dies, three days after most of the members of the royal family are shot and killed.  Dipendra is accused of the shooting.

1998- Terry Nichols is sentenced to life in federal prison for his role in the Oklahoma City bombing.

1997- Small Faces bassist Ronnie Lane dies at the age of 51 after battling multiple sclerosis since 1977.

1992- Priscilla Presley announces America has chosen the image of the 1950’s Elvis for a Postal stamp.

1989- The Chinese government cracks down on student protesters in the Tiananmen Square massacre.  Hundreds of people are killed.

1979- The Bee Gees are number one on the charts with their hit, “Love You Inside Out.”

1972- Black activist and professor Angela Davis is aquitted of murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy charges related to the murder of a judge.  Davis had been charged because she knew the perpetrators and bought the gun used in the crime.

1958- Sheb Wooley tops the charts with his hit, “The Purple People Eater.”

1949- The hour-long variety show “Cavalcade of Stars” premieres.  The show is known for launching the show “The Honeymooners.”

1944- Allied troops liberate Rome.

1917- Pulitzer Prizes, awarding excellence in journalism and other writing, are awarded for the first time.

1784- Frenchwoman Marie Thible becomes the first woman to fly a free balloon.
